O LEVEL BUSINESS 7081

7081 Paper 1: Short Answer and Data Response

1 hour 30 minutes80 marks50% of O Level

Format: Four questions with a mixture of short answers and structured data responses. Answer all questions.

What it tests: Accurate knowledge of business terms and concepts across the whole syllabus, applied to short business situations and data.

Approximate mark split: Knowledge 40% · Application 30% · Analysis 20% · Evaluation 10%

How to answer

  • Learn definitions exactly. Knowledge carries the largest share of Paper 1 marks, so a precise definition is the fastest way to secure them.
  • Read each question's business context first. Use the business name, its product and any figures in every answer that asks you to explain.
  • Develop each point in a chain: state it, explain why it happens and show the effect on the business.
  • Show the formula and your working in every calculation, and include the unit or currency in the answer.
  • In the final part of a question, make a decision. Say what the business should do and why, using the information given.

Where students lose marks

  • Spending too long on early two mark parts and rushing the higher mark parts at the end.
  • Describing a concept in general without linking it to the business in the question.
  • Using profit to measure business size. The syllabus states that profit is not a method of measuring business size.
O LEVEL BUSINESS 7081

7081 Paper 2: Case Study

1 hour 30 minutes80 marks50% of O Level

Format: Four questions based on a case study provided as an insert with the paper. Answer all questions.

What it tests: Using evidence from one business case to analyse problems, compare options and make justified recommendations.

Approximate mark split: Knowledge 30% · Application 30% · Analysis 25% · Evaluation 15%

How to answer

  • Read the whole insert before the questions. Note the business, its owners, objectives, problems and every table or chart.
  • Go back to the insert for each question. Quote figures and facts from the case to support each point.
  • When asked to choose between options, explain both, compare them for this business and then make a clear choice.
  • Justify the recommendation: why your choice is better than the alternative here, and what it depends on.
  • Leave time for the final parts of each question, where the evaluation marks are.

Where students lose marks

  • Copying sentences from the insert without explaining what they mean for the business.
  • Answers that could apply to any business, with no detail from the case.
  • Giving a recommendation with no reason, or sitting on the fence between options.
