A Level Business 9609 Exam Papers: Paper 1, 2, 3 and 4 Guide
What each Cambridge 9609 Business paper tests, how long it is, how the marks work and how to answer every question type, from short answers to strategy essays.
AS LEVEL
9609 Paper 1: Business Concepts 1
1 hour 15 minutes40 marks40% of AS Level · 20% of A Level
Format: Section A has four short answer questions; the first three have two parts. Section B is one essay from a choice of two, and each essay has two parts.
What it tests: Precise knowledge of AS Level Business concepts, short explanations and one extended essay that ends in a supported judgement.
How to answer
- Define first. A short answer question rewards an exact definition, so learn key terms word for word, then add one developed point.
- Explain with a chain. State the point, give the reason and finish with the effect on the business: because, therefore, so.
- Plan the essay for two minutes. Choose the question where you can build both sides of an argument, not the one with the most familiar topic.
- End the essay with a judgement. Say which factor matters most and why, and what the answer depends on.
Where students lose marks
- Writing a long answer to a two or three mark question and running out of time for the essay.
- Definitions that describe an example instead of stating the concept.
- Essays that list advantages and disadvantages with no final judgement.
AS LEVEL
9609 Paper 2: Business Concepts 2
1 hour 30 minutes60 marks60% of AS Level · 30% of A Level
Format: Two data response questions. Each question has six parts and is built around a short business case with data.
What it tests: Applying AS Level concepts to a specific business, using the data accurately, analysing consequences and evaluating options.
How to answer
- Read the case before the questions, then read it again with the questions in mind. Underline the business name, its objectives and every figure.
- Use the case in every developed answer. A point that could be written about any business earns knowledge marks only.
- Show every step in calculations: the formula, the figures substituted and the answer with its unit.
- In the final evaluative part, compare options against the business's situation and recommend one. Explain what could change your recommendation.
Where students lose marks
- Generic answers that never mention the business or its data.
- Calculation answers with no working, or with the unit missing.
- Repeating case material without explaining what it means for the decision.
A LEVEL (A2)
9609 Paper 3: Business Decision-Making
1 hour 45 minutes60 marks30% of A Level
Format: Five questions based on one case study. Question 3 has three parts and Question 4 has two parts.
What it tests: A Level content, with AS Level knowledge assumed. Analysing a longer case, working with numerical information and making justified business decisions.
How to answer
- Spend the first minutes on the case and its appendices. Note the problem the business faces and the decision it must make.
- Link each answer to evidence from the case and the appendices. Quote figures and use them in your argument.
- Treat calculations as part of the decision. After the answer, say what the result means for the business.
- Make recommendations specific: what the business should do, why it suits this business and what risk remains.
Where students lose marks
- Analysing a topic in general rather than the decision the case asks about.
- Ignoring the appendices, where most of the numerical evidence sits.
- Recommending an option without weighing it against the alternative.
A LEVEL (A2)
9609 Paper 4: Business Strategy
1 hour 15 minutes40 marks20% of A Level
Format: Two essay questions based on a case study.
What it tests: Strategic thinking with A Level content, AS Level knowledge assumed. Long, balanced arguments about the direction a business should take.
How to answer
- Plan before writing: the strategic issue, two or three arguments on each side and the judgement you will reach.
- Use strategy tools where they help the argument, such as SWOT, PEST or Ansoff, and apply them to the case business.
- Consider the short term and the long term, and which stakeholders gain or lose.
- Build the conclusion throughout the essay, then state it clearly: the decision, the main reason and what it depends on.
Where students lose marks
- Describing a strategy tool without using it to reach a decision.
- Essays with one side of the argument only.
- A conclusion that repeats earlier points instead of making a judgement.
